Help
Answers to the questions we get most often, including the technical detail. If you cannot find what you need, write to us: we reply the same working day.
Other materials
Right now we cut acrylic (PMMA). We can supply these other materials to order, with a custom quote the same day.
Do you cut polypropylene?+
Yes, to order, but it is worth knowing what the result looks like: polypropylene melts under the laser heat instead of vaporising, so the edge comes out with burrs and can be slightly wavy. For parts where the edge will be visible, a CNC router gives a much better result. Tell us about the part and we will tell you how we would make it.
What about POM, Delrin or polycarbonate?+
We never laser-cut POM (Delrin): when it burns it releases toxic formaldehyde. Polycarbonate is not a good candidate either, because it yellows and leaves a burnt edge. Both are materials for a CNC router, not a laser. If your part needs either of them, write to us and we will tell you whether we can help or who to contact.
How do I order a material that is not on the website?+
Email us at hola@haztupieza.es with the dimensions, quantity and what the part is for. If you have the cutting file, attach it. We will reply the same working day with a firm price and lead time.
Design for 3D printing
FDM printing has its own design rules. Following them can be the difference between a part that works and one that breaks the first time you use it.
What minimum wall thickness can I use?+
With a 0.4 mm nozzle, the practical minimum is 0.8 mm (two lines). Below that, the wall will be hollow or may not print at all. For load-bearing parts, do not go below 1.6 mm.
What overhang angle can print without supports?+
Up to around 45 degrees from vertical, the part can support itself. Beyond that it needs support, which leaves a mark on the surface. If you can, redesign the overhang as a 45-degree chamfer and you avoid both the support and the mark it leaves.
What clearance should I leave between mating parts?+
Leave 0.2 to 0.3 mm clearance per side for a sliding fit, and 0.1 to 0.15 mm for a press fit. If the part is large, leave a little more: material shrinkage adds up over length.
Which direction is the part weakest in?+
A printed part is anisotropic: the bond between layers is considerably weaker than the continuous material. Orient the part so the main load runs in the plane of the layers, not perpendicular to them. Tell us how it will be loaded and we can orient it for you.
Can you print a model I downloaded from MakerWorld or Printables?+
Yes. Download the file —if there is a 3MF, use the 3MF: it comes with the parts separated and the colours already set— and upload it to the configurator. The only thing you need to check first is the model licence: most are non-commercial, which means you can order the part for yourself but not to sell it. We explain it all in our guide to downloaded models.
My STL has a mesh error. What do I do?+
We repair meshes with basic errors at no extra cost. If the file has large holes or inverted geometry, we will tell you before manufacture. To export properly from your CAD software, use a fine tessellation tolerance and check that the model is in millimetres.
Multicolour printing with AMS
Why does multicolour cost so much more?+
The AMS uses a single extruder: to change colour it has to retract the previous filament, load the new one and purge the mixed material until it runs clean. Each change uses around 1.6 g of filament that goes to waste and about 26 seconds of machine time. On a 200-layer part with two colours, that can mean hundreds of grams of waste and several extra hours.
How can I make a multicolour part cheaper?+
Three options: reduce the number of colours, group colour changes at just a few heights (horizontal bands are better than a pattern spread throughout the whole part), or print in one colour and paint it afterwards. Our priming and painting service is usually cheaper than multicolour printing for tall parts.
Can I use the AMS for soluble support?+
Yes, it is one of its best uses. We load PVA (water-soluble) or HIPS (limonene-soluble) in one channel and the part material in another. The support dissolves away, leaving internal geometries that would be impossible to clean by hand with the same finish.
Preparing files for laser cutting
A properly prepared file can go straight to cutting. A poorly prepared one has to be reworked and delays your order.
What file format should I send?+
SVG or DXF, always at 1:1 scale and in millimetres. SVG is more convenient if you work in Illustrator, Inkscape or Figma; DXF if you use AutoCAD or a 3D CAD package.
Why does my file show less surface area than I expected?+
We calculate the area from the largest outer contour and subtract the inner contours. If your design has open paths or overlapping duplicates, the calculation will be off. Join the paths and remove duplicates before exporting.
How do I mark what I want engraved?+
In SVG, lines are cut and black fills are engraved. Draw the outline of the part as a line with no fill and fill whatever you want engraved with solid black: it comes out in a single shade, frosted white on cast acrylic (PMMA) and toasted on MDF. Don't use greys or transparency, because they are engraved just like black. If a filled shape also needs to be cut out, give it a pure red outline (#FF0000). Extruded acrylic can't be engraved, and in DXF everything is cut.
Acrylic (PMMA): cast vs extruded
What is the real difference?+
Cast acrylic (PMMA) (PMMA GS) is made by polymerising between two sheets of glass and has a much higher molecular weight. It cuts with a clean, glossy edge, does not build up internal stress when machined and withstands solvents better. Extruded acrylic (PMMA) (PMMA XT) comes from an extruder, is cheaper and has tighter thickness tolerance, but tends to crack when drilled and gives a poorer laser-cut edge.
Why do you only use cast acrylic (PMMA)?+
Because we laser-cut it and the result is completely different. Cast acrylic (PMMA) comes off the laser with a glossy edge and needs no finishing; extruded acrylic (PMMA) comes out matt and marked. The difference in material price is small compared with the finishing time it saves.
Can it be glued and bent?+
Yes. Acrylic (PMMA) can be bonded with acrylic adhesive (methylene chloride or two-part acrylic adhesive) for a virtually invisible joint, and heat-bent at between 150 and 170 degrees. We offer both services as finishing options in the configurator.
How do I clean it without damaging it?+
Use water with mild soap and a microfibre cloth, always damp. Never use alcohol, ammonia or standard glass cleaner: over time they can cause the material to crack. And never wipe it dry, because dust scratches it.
Prices, payments and invoices
Do prices include VAT?+
Yes. The highlighted price already includes 21% VAT and is exactly what you will pay. Many of our customers are businesses and self-employed professionals who reclaim VAT, so we always show the taxable amount excluding VAT alongside it. The only figures shown excluding VAT by their nature are the minimum order and the free-shipping threshold, and we state that clearly where they appear.
Is there a minimum order?+
There is no minimum quantity: we make orders from a single part. There is a minimum manufacturing charge of €12.00 excluding VAT per order, because below that amount the job setup costs more than the part itself. If your order doesn't reach it, you can still place it: a surcharge for the difference is added, and you see it in the cart before paying.
How can I pay?+
By card (your bank may ask you to confirm the purchase), by PayPal or by bank transfer. For bank transfers, we give you the IBAN and payment reference when you finish the order, and also by email. We start manufacturing when the payment reaches our account, usually on the next working day. If the payment doesn't arrive within a few days, the order is cancelled automatically and you aren't charged anything.
Can I pay in instalments+
Yes, with plazox, the instalment payment offered by Spain's major banks. Choose to pay by card and, on your bank's payment page, enter your credit card details and choose the number of instalments: 3, 6 or 12. It is for purchases over €60, with a credit card from a participating bank, and the conditions (fees and interest) are those of your contract with your bank. We receive the full payment and you don't have to fill in any forms.
Do you store my card details?+
No. Your card details are sent encrypted directly to the payment gateway: we only receive signed confirmation that the transaction has been authorised. We never see or store your card number.
Can I request an invoice in my company's name?+
Yes. Select Company at checkout and enter the legal company name and CIF. The invoice is issued in the company's name and emailed to you with the confirmation.
How long is a quote valid for?+
Quotes are saved for 14 days. Once that lead time has passed, they are recalculated using the current rates when you confirm the order, and if the amount has changed we show you before you pay.
Orders and deliveries
When does the lead time start?+
From when the payment gateway confirms payment, not when you place the order. For bank transfers, it starts when the payment reaches our account.
Can I change or cancel an order?+
As long as it is still marked Pending payment or Payment confirmed, yes: write to us with the order code. Once it goes into production, material and machine time are committed and we cannot cancel it.
What if the part arrives with a problem?+
If the defect is ours (dimension out of tolerance, layer separation, burnt cut), we will remake it at no cost or refund you —your choice. Send us photos within 14 days of delivery.
Can I collect from the workshop?+
Yes, with no shipping charge. Tell us in the order notes and we will let you know when it is ready to collect.
Confidentiality of your files
What do you do with the models I upload?+
They are stored encrypted in our storage, outside the public website, and only opened by the technician preparing your job. They cannot be accessed by URL, are not shared and are used only to manufacture your order.
Do you sign NDAs?+
Yes, no problem. Write to us before placing the order and we will sign your NDA or send you ours.
How long do you keep my files?+
Twelve months from the last manufacture, so you can repeat an order without uploading anything again. If you would rather we delete them sooner, ask us and we will.
